WILDERNESS AMBASSADORS

WHY VOLUNTEER?

With federal staffing cuts continuing to impact some of Wyoming’s most iconic Wilderness areas, there remains a pressing need for enthusiastic and passionate volunteers to help steward these public wildlands. WWA Volunteer Wilderness Ambassadors make a tangible difference through their "boots on the ground" presence, backpacking through remote terrain and experiencing the beauty of summer in the Fitzpatrick, Popo Agie, or Washakie Wilderness firsthand.

This program is run in partnership with the USFS.

WHO VOLUNTEERS?

WWA Volunteer Wilderness Ambassadors are enthusiastic and passionate Wyoming public wildlands champions interested in helping to bridge the gap created by federal layoffs by heading out on six- to eight-day Wilderness Hitches in either the South Zone or the North Zone of the Shoshone National Forest.

Requirements for Wilderness Ambassadors:

  • Experience and comfort with backcountry travel and overnight dispersed camping in bear country.

  • Ownership of all required gear for 8 days backpacking.

  • A high level of fitness (backpacking, hiking, trail work, etc).

  • Confidence in navigating on and off trail using both paper maps and GPS applications.

  • Willingness to carry and operate a smartphone and a basic mapping application for data collection.

  • Willingness to carry out physical tasks in addition to the basics of backpacking.

  • A passion for Wilderness and a desire to help steward it.

Desired Qualifications for Wilderness Ambassadors:

  • Background in USFS Wilderness trail maintenance.

  • A Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or similar emergency medicine certification.

  • A friend or partner who would be interested in taking part in this opportunity with you! We need two people for safety reasons and USFS requirements. It would be ideal to have a pair who are already familiar with each other to sign up and help us get this work done.

Please note that while this is a volunteer position, all Ambassadors will be granted a daily stipend and will be reimbursed for their mileage for direct travel to and from the predetermined trailhead.
