UPDATE: SJ1 Signed By Governor Gordon

Pronghorn on Wyoming public landscape

WWA

Mar 5, 2026

WWA and the Wyoming Outdoor Council (WOC) write letter recommending caution and restraint.

On February 28, Governor Gordon signed Senate Joint Resolution 1 (SJ001), requesting the federal government to allow Wyoming to manage federal oil and gas leasing.

WWA strongly opposed this resolution as it came before both the House and the Senate; proponents of the bill repeatedly and openly expressed their desire to transfer public lands to the state or to private hands, and viewed SJ001 as a way to ultimately gain control of public landscapes.

Now, as the Secretary of State submits the resolution to the federal government, WWA is asking Governor Gordon to put guardrails on what this program might look like. In a letter to the Governor sent on March 4, 2026, WWA and the Wyoming Outdoor Council (WOC) recommended that the Governor exercise caution and restraint. Elected officials need to honor what the people of this state know to be true: that public lands belong in public hands.
