SESSION TWO:
"The Role of Tribal Historic Preservation Offices in Identifying and Protecting Sacred Sites on Public Lands,"
In this webinar, Crystal will discuss how the Arapaho Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) works with agencies, the state, and private companies to identify, assess, and mitigate the impacts of planned development, under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Crystal works with multiple tribes across the historic cultural landscape of the Arapaho nation, which covers seventeen states from Montana to Wisconsin and New Mexico. The Arapaho THPO will typically send tribal cultural specialists out to accompany the archaeological team on a given project. The office relies not only on physical evidence and features but also oral histories and ancestral stories held by various tribes.
MEET THE FACILITATOR:
Crystal C’Bearing has been with the Northern Arapaho THPO since 2017, beginning her career as an archaeological tech and working her way up through the years to her position today as Director. She previously spent eleven years in Laramie, where she received degrees at the University of Wyoming in History, American Indian studies and Environment and Natural Resources. While in Laramie she also engaged with the community in rehabilitation work.
