Bighorn wilderness effort continues

CASPER - Advocates continue to press their case to designate more than 33,000 acres of backcountry in the Bighorn Mountains as wilderness.

It's been almost four years since Bighorn National Forest officials recommended that Congress designate the Rock Creek area of the Bighorns as wilderness. It would be the first new wilderness area in Wyoming in the past 25 years.

Liz Howell of the Wyoming Wilderness Association said some progress has been made in moving the wilderness designation forward.

Howell said the Sheridan-based group is steadily gaining support for the campaign. She said the group is working hard to address the concerns of those who are opposed to the idea or who are at least hesitant to support it.
A wilderness area designation requires an act of Congress.
