Bridger-Teton Wilderness Survey

The Wyoming Wilderness Association is conducting an inventory of potential wilderness areas in the Bridger Teton National Forest. These areas have been previously inventoried as roadless and contain thousands of acres of pristine wild lands that have potential to qualify for permanent wilderness protection.

Every 10-15 years, the national forests construct a Forest Plan. The Bridger Teton National Forest is in the midst of the Forest Plan Revision Process, which provides concerned and interested citizens like ourselves with a unique opportunity to recommend areas for wilderness protection. To do so, however, we need to collect accurate information on the current state of these roadless areas within the Bridger-Teton National Forest and document their wilderness characteristics.

How to Participate in the Survey Effort

There are several ways you can become involved. We have over 1.5 million acres of areas with wilderness potential to inventory and are relying heavily on the assistance of volunteers.  Ideally we like volunteers to utilize digital photography, a GPS, and written comment to document the wilderness character of these places. We are willing to train interested volunteers in this process. Please contact us to schedule a day when you could join our staff for a survey to learn the technique.

If you are unable to commit at this level you can still assist the campaign. If you have a digital photograph documenting the wilderness character of one of the potential wilderness areas, know the exact location the photograph was taken, and are willing to write comment regarding the wilderness character we can add this information to our data base. Attach the photograph, location (ideally Latitude and Longitude), and written comment to an email and send it to forrest@wildwyo.org. Additionally, we strongly encourage you to submit your comments directly to Rick Fox,  Forest Plan Team Leader, BTNF at  btnfplanrevision@fs.fed.us.
