Cloud Peak Wilderness Area
Trail Head: Circle Park/Willow Lake
Description: Hike into the open subalpine country beneath the bare granit faces of the southern Bighorns
Distance: 8 miles round trip
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
Directions: Take US highway 16 west from Buffalo into the bighorns for 15 miles where you meet a junction and go west on forest road 20 for 2.5 miles, go south on forest road 384 and at .5 miles the trailhead begins
Gros Ventre Wilderness Area
Trail Head: Swift Creek to Shoal Lake
Description: A rugged, steep 2-3 day hike into the high alpine region of the Gros Ventre Wilderness.
Distance: 12 miles round trip
Difficulty: Strenuous
Directions: Forest road 30500 leads you 10 miles to a parking circle and trailhead
Trail Head: Goodwin Lake
Description: A moderate hike leading to a high alpine lake
Distance: 6 miles and approximately 3 hours round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Directions: From the national elk refuge, follow the signs to the Curtis Canyon campground. Take sheep creek road to the left at the fork in the road and then a right at the next fork which takes you to the trailhead
Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area
Trail Head: Phillips Pass
Description: A great day hike into the alpine region in the southernmost of the Teton Range and Jedediah Smith Wilderness
Distance: 8 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Directions: From Jackson you travel west along Wyoming 22 for 10 miles to Phillips Canyon Road (forest road 30972) towards the north and park. Walk .5 miles to the obvious trailhead that continues north
Popo Agie/ Bridger Wilderness Area
Trail Head: Sweetwater Gap
Description: A long but quite enjoyable hike to a high pass that accesses the Popo Agie Wilderness from the south
Distance: 7 miles one way
Difficulty: Moderately strenuous
Directions: Take the Bridger Wilderness, Big Sandy Entrance off of Wyoming Highway 28 and go 15.4 miles on this road. Turn onto the first road heading northward towards Juel ranch and sweetwater gap and stay on this road for 8.5 miles. Turn left at a sign that reads 6 miles to Bridger Wilderness and follow this road to its end where there will be a small parking area and the trailhead.
Trail Head: Little Sandy Lake
Description: A day hike or easy overnighter to a spectacular lake setting in the extreme southeastern corner of the Bridger Wilderness
Distance: 4.5 miles one way
Difficulty: Moderately strenuous
Directions: Take the Bridger Wilderness, Big Sandy Entrance off of Wyoming Highway 28 and go 15.4 miles on this road. Turn onto the first road heading northward towards Juel ranch and sweetwater gap and stay on this road for 8.5 miles. Turn left at a sign that reads 6 miles to Bridger Wilderness and follow this road to its end where there will be a small parking area and the trailhead.
Trail Head: Clear Creek Natural Bridge
Description: A peaceful day hike to an amazing geological structure
Distance: 10 miles round trip
Difficulty: Moderately strenuous
Directions: Travel 6 miles west from Pinedale onus highway 191 to the Bridger Wilderness Green River sign (Wyoming 352). Go north on this road for 26.4 miles and then continue on the unpaved road for another 20 miles until you reach the trailheads and a camping area.
Teton/ Washakie Wilderness Area
Trail Head: Holmes Cave
Description: A nice day hike into the pinnacled terrain of the Teton/Washakie Wilderness areas
Distance: 9.2 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Directions: From Moran Junction, travel 21 miles east to the only unsigned road that jogs north near a cautionary yellow curve symbol highway warning sign and travel .25 miles to the trailhead
Trail Head: Yellow Creek Loop
Description: Great scenery and high chance of wildlife sighting
Distance: 12 miles round trip
Difficulty: Strenuous
Directions: From Meeteetse, Wyoming drive west 6.5 miles on Wyoming 290 and take a left onto Wood River Road and travel 7 miles and take a right at the T to go over the river on a small bridge. Travel 12 more miles; camping will be on your left and the trailhead begins past the south gate at the roads end
Trail Head: Meadow Creek Basin
Description: A short steep climb to an alpine basin
Distance: 6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Driections: From Meeteetse, Wyoming drive west 6.5 miles on Wyoming 290 and take a left onto Wood River Road and travel 7 miles and take a right at the T to go over the river on a small bridge. Travel 12 more miles; camping will be on your left and the trailhead begins past the south gate at the roads end.
